DESCRIPTION
Everything about Eiri Yuki's attitude oozes "arrogant, cold-hearted bastard". No, wait - make that "sexy, arrogant, cold-hearted bastard". Yuki is cynical in his worldview, blunt in expressing his opinions, and insensitive to the distress his careless words may cause. In fact, he seems to take a perverse pleasure in baiting Shuichi, his insults apparently calculated to generate the maximum level of outrage.

Not that Yuki can't turn on the charm when he wants to. Besides being blessed with sharp good looks, this man can be damned seductive. All he has to do is smile that slow little half-smile, and his legion of fans, his female admirers, and one Shuichi Shindo simply melt into warm, gooey puddles.

But Yuki himself acts like a man mystified by love. He is distrustful of Shuichi's whole-hearted declarations of affection, demanding to know why it is that Shuichi wants him. Is it because of his looks? Money? Fame? Sex? Shuichi answers freely - "I don't know myself, but I can't help it. If I love you, I love you." - but Yuki only finds this unsettling.

Eiri Yuki is a man who gives very little of himself away. Even though his best-selling romance novels have made him famous, he is private to the point of secrecy. He deliberately avoids telling Shuichi anything about his background or personal life unless directly confronted. For that matter, Yuki isn't even his real name - it's the pseudonym he uses to publish his writing.

Because of his unusual fair hair and eyes, similar to a Westerner's, Yuki found it hard to fit in as a child. He spent his adolescent years abroad, an experience which should have helped him develop a sense of confidence. But somehow it all went wrong. Yuki returned to Japan a disillusioned, emotionally-damaged young man, keeping almost everyone who might care about him at a distance. Even now, he is reluctant to open up his heart, rarely allowing anyone to glimpse his hidden, vulnerable side.
